TUMMY TUCK AESTHETICS
In general:
Abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure performed for people who have tummy sagging after various reasons such as pregnancy, obesity, and excessive weight loss due to bariatric surgery or diet. Although tummy tuck surgery is popular only among women, the number of male patients who have recently lost significant weight have increased gradually during the last decade.
What are the methods in the management of abdominal protuberance?
Tummy tuck surgery varies as mini tummy tuck, full tummy tuck, 360-degree lower body lift and inverted T-shaped (fleur de lis) abdominoplasty depending on the degree of sagging and deformation of that area. Preoperative assessment by a plastic surgeon is of utmost importance in deciding the type of the operation.
Mini Abdominoplasty: The main purpose of mini tummy tuck operations is to remove the sagging that occurs in a limited area (lower portion of the tummy. In this type of operation, since the deformed area on the abdomen is less, the suture line is shorter than in full tummy tuck.
Full Abdominoplasty: Full tummy tuck operation is a preferred method when the deformed area is larger. The portion of the tummy below the level of the navel is removed and dissection with or without liposuction is performed for the remaining part.
Fleur De Lis (Reverse T) Abdominoplasty: It is mostly carried out in patients with excessive saggy skin due to significant weight loss and is performed by removing excess skin tissue from both horizontal and vertical incisions in an inverted T shape. Hence 3D body sharpening and removal of most of the stretch marks are possible
360 Degree Abdominoplasty: Generally, in cases of serious weight loss (after obesity operations or diets), sagging in the abdomen may extend towards the waist and back areas. In such cases, 360-degree tummy tuck is recommended. It is also called lower body lift or belt lipectomy depending on the level of the excision. It provides not only contouring of the tummy, waists and the back but also butt lifting and stretching of the outer thighs.
What kind of combinations can be done in tummy tuck operations?
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (www.plasticsurgery.org), the only effective treatment for sagging belly tissue is a tummy tuck. The extent of these operations (hence the operation time and cost) varies from patient to patient. Often the best results are obtained with a combination of tummy tuck+liposuction+muscle-fascia repair (i.e., internal corset stitches). It should not be forgotten that the results of the operation do not last forever; nature will continue its effect on the body from where it left off. A proper diet under the control of a dietitian after the operation, a smoke-free and stress-free life and continuous exercise are necessary to get the best results from the operation and to obtain a long-lasting result.
How long is the hospital stay after the surgery?
In tummy tuck operations, 1 or 2 nights of hospitalization is generally adequate.
What is the recovery process like after the surgery?
After tummy tuck surgery, a recovery process is observed that differs according to the patient's metabolism, lifestyle, and genetic background. Pain, soreness, bruising, and swelling are normal for a few days immediately after surgery. The stitches on the skin surface 8if nonresorbable stitches are used) are removed after about 7-8 days. Although return to normal life after surgery varies from person to person, depending on body structure and recovery speed, it generally takes 3-4 weeks. A 10-day accommodation is recommended for patients coming from outside the city or abroad, as they have to come for control on the 3rd and 8th days after the surgery.
Will there be any scars after the surgery?
As in every surgical operation, there will be scars in tummy tuck surgery. However, since it is very aesthetic and thin stitches are placed and it is usually hidden at the level of underwear. Scars take their final texture, height, softness, and color in at least 1 year. The scar almost always migrates down within several months in a much less visible area.
