LIPOSUCTION
In general:
'Liposuction' is a surgical procedure that involves removing the excess fat cells in the body by means of vacuum systems. The number of fat cells in the body, which does not change since puberty, varies from person to person according to weight gain and genetic background. The volume of these cells, which accumulate more in some areas, increases with weight gain.
Liposuction surgery is performed not for weight loss, but for regional body shaping in structurally resistant areas where diet and exercise cannot be effective.
How are liposuction surgeries performed?
The duration of liposuction surgery varies according to the area(s) to be treated. It takes about 45-120 minutes in extensive liposuction interventions, may be longer in case that high energy (e.g., vaser) applications are added. General or sedation anesthesia can be preferred due to the extent of the operation.
Which techniques are used in liposuction surgeries?
Liposuction surgery is a vacuum fat removal procedure. The logic is same also in all new generation liposuction techniques. High energy applications such as laser and/or USG have emerged recently. However, scientific data has not proven their superiority over the tumescent liposuction technique yet.
What are the important issues before the operation?
Before liposuction surgery, smoking should be avoided for at least 2 weeks and blood thinners should not be used for 7-10 days before and after the surgery. Herbal medicines, tea, etc. should not be used since they may prolong the bleeding tests. Medications such as antidepressants, antihypertensives, antidiabetics etc. and their dosages should be evaluated both by your family practitioner and anesthesiologist before the operation.
How much fat can be removed with liposuction surgery?
In liposuction surgery, the amount of fat that can be removed varies depending on the weight and fat ratio of the patient. However, it is stated that under normal conditions, 4-5 liters of fat can be removed in one session with a minimal risk. Liposuction more than 6L is thought to increase the operation risks significantly according to some researchers.
How long is the hospital stay after liposuction surgery?
You stay in the hospital for 0 to 1 day.
How is the recovery process after the surgery?
A special corset should be used for 3-6 weeks after the surgery. At the end of this period, it is recommended to contribute to the resolution of edema with lymph drainage massages. The final appearance after surgery is reached after 6-9 months. Since the number of fat cells in the area is reduced after the operation, the possibility of later fat accumulation decreases. However, if the diet is not taken care of after the procedure, an increase in fat volume should be expected in every part of the body. If needed later, liposuction can be done again.
Will there be any scars after liposuction surgery?
Liposuction surgery is very advantageous in terms of scars. Except in rare cases, it does not leave a very visible-noticeable scar. The cannula is 4-5 mm at the entry points, and these are mostly hidden.
How often should the follow-ups be after liposuction surgery?
All patients are advised to visit our office within a week of the surgery. So, patients coming from outside the city or abroad should stay in the city for at least 5-7 days.
What are the risks of liposuction surgery?
Liposuction is an operation and like in any surgery, it has risks. Albeit very rarely, anesthesia complications, bruising, changes in sensation, irregularities due to wound healing, damage to vessels, nerves and deep organs, asymmetries, edema, and wounds are some possible complications.
