GYNECOMASTIA

What is a Gynecomastia?

The medical term gynecomastia means “woman-like breasts.” It is a common condition in one or both breasts affecting many men as a result of hormonal changes, hereditary conditions, disease, weight gain or the use of certain drugs. Male breast reduction procedure surgically removes fat and/or glandular tissue from the breasts to obtain a flatter, firmer chest consistent with a masculine body contour. In more severe cases, excess skin is also to be removed, leaving a scar around the nipple or even a lollipop scar.

Gynecomastia is characterized by the following in one (unilaterally) or both breasts (bilaterally):

– Excess localized fat

– Excess glandular breast tissue development

– A combination of both excess fat and glandular tissue

Best candidates are those who have firm, elastic skin that will reshape to the body’s new contours.

How long does gynecomastia surgery last?

No guarantee can be given but results are permanent. It is rare but a second operation may be necessary to achieve desired results.

How is the gynecomastia performed?
Enlarged male breasts can be reduced by liposuction and/or by excision of excess glandular tissue. We prefer liposuction in mild-moderate cases and combination of liposuction and excision methods in the others.

Duration of operation: 45 minutes – 1,5 hour ( general or sedation anesthesia)

Hospital stay: 0 – 1 night

What to expect after surgery?

There may be temporary loss of breast sensation, numbness and burning after the gynecomastia procedure which may last even up to a year. Swelling, however, should subside within six months. A support garment may be worn post surgery for a few days to weeks to assist healing.

How long will it be before I can get back to my normal life?

A 3-10 night’s of stay is recommended in Turkey following gynecomastia. Most men can return to work within 3-10 days however, final results will take longer to be seen due to swelling.

Can gynecomastia be performed without scar?

Scars after liposuction are minimal. Scars around the nipples or even lollipop scars may be created after the treatment of excessive gynecomastias. These scars will fade and become much less disturbing after a while. Scar revision is always an option but it is recommended to wait for at least 6 months.
