BLEPHAROPLASTY
In General:
The eyelid contains the thinnest skin in the body. Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of age- or genetic-related excess skin and bulged fat tissue and correction of ptozis. It also provides stretching of the periorbital soft tissues, improvement of the tear-trough deformity (deep folds under the lower eyelids) and fixing of the prolapsed tear gland. This operation can also help to improve vision in older patients, who suffer hooding of their upper eyelids. Eyes will appear fresher and more youthful after the operation.
Please note that: Additional operations such as fat injections, face lifting or subperiosteal midface lifting are often necessary to obtain optimal results from lower blepharoplasty.
Who is a suitable candidate for facelift surgery?
Any one of these conditions may be indicative of surgery: excess skin or puffiness of the upper eyelids obscuring the natural fold, laxity of the skin and deeper tissues, fine wrinkles of the skin and bagginess of the lower eyelids.
How long does eyelid aesthetic surgery take, which anesthesia methods are used?
Upper or lower eyelid surgery usually takes about 30 minutes in experienced hands. In cases where lower and upper eyelid operations are carried out together, the total time reaches an average of 1-1.5 hours. In eyelid aesthetic operations local and/or sedation can be preferred.
How are the incisions planned?
In upper blepharoplasty, lower incision is planned 5-10 mm above the eyelashes and the amount of skin excision is determined by testing with forceps. In lower blepharoplasty an incision planned on one of the natural creases just a few millimeters below the eyelashes.
How long is the hospital stay after eyelid surgery?
Generally, hospitalization is not recommended, you can be discharged on the same day.
Will there be any scars after eyelid surgery?
The severity of scar formation differs from person to person, and generally the reddened scars mature within months and become much less obvious. In most people, there is no noticeable scar after the healing and scar maturation period. The scars extended from the corners of the eyes become more natural by blending into the crow's feet over time.
How long do the surgery results last?
Removal of the fat from the eyelids to eradicate the puffiness and bags is permanent and this condition is expected not to recur. Skin, however, continues to age and may need re-treatment after a while. No guarantee can be given by any surgeon as to exactly how long you can enjoy the results of surgery, however this procedure is known to be long lasting.
What to expect immediately after surgery
Initially, you may feel a tight sensation around the eyes, with minor discomfort that lasts for a few days. At first the incisions will be red and hard in texture; these scars will eventually mature and become almost invisible in most cases. Any swelling and bruising usually relieves significantly within 7-10 days (this varies from person to person). Vision may be blurred for a few days and eyes may be sensitive to light. Stitches will be removed at the end of the first week, and within another few days. Make-up is advised after 3 weeks of the surgery in our clinic.
How long will it be before I can get back to my routine life?
Straining, bending forward and lifting should be avoided during the early post-operative period however you will be able to return most of your normal activities in 10 days. You should not wear contact lenses for a week or two. Scar, dimples and swelling may persist for some months on the lower eyelids. Healing process is much faster on the upper eyelids.
